CRIME AND DISEASE

BETTER DIAGNOSIS OF V.D. (By TelegTaph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Concern at the increase in crime among young people and at the spread of venereal disease was expressed by Mr. Harker (National, Waipawa) in speaking in the Address-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives yesterday.

-Dealing with venereal disease, he declared that he knew certain medicql steps were being taken, but he was afraid mere medical steps were not sufficient. The Government would have to interest itself in assisting in some active way to raise the moral standard of the people.

Dr. McMillan added tnat the increase in the number of V.D. cases reported was largely due to better diagnosis, resulting in many people receiving treatment who did not receive it before. A few years ago when people contracted the disease they did not get treatment but infected others. To-day they were treated, and the cost of treatment came from the Social Security Fund.
