AUSTRALIAN GAS COSTS

Problems facing gas eorppanles in Australia are similar in .many respccts to those encountered by such undertakings in New Zealand. Net profit fell by £6130, despite an Increase of more than 78,000,000 units in gas sales, said the chairman, Sir Samuel Cohen, at the annual meeting of the Australian Gas Light Company. Costs beyond control of the company continued to rise, but by the use of every possible economy the dividend rate was maintained at 4 per cent. In December the company asked the Government to appoint a board in terms of the Gas Act to inquire into the price of gas. In January a second application was made, and the Minister replied that he would communicate with the company later. The company had heard nothing further.
