USE OF HOSES STOPPED

CITY WATER SUPPLY

COUNCIL TAKES ACTION

In the Auckland area water storage yesterday there were 513,000,000 gallons of water. The full capacity of the storage is 1,569,000,000 gallons. The daily consumption is 16,800,000 gallons. Quoting these figures at the meeting of the City Council last night, Mr. A. S. Bailey, chairman of the works committee, recommended that, in order to preserve the position, for the time being the use of hoses and sprinklers for private gardens be prohibited till further notice.

The question of the future development of the Water supply, said Mr. Bailey, had had the consideration of the committee for a lengthy period, and it was hoped to bring down a comprehensive report at the next meeting of the council, when various schemes would be discussed to a point where the council would be able to adopt recommendations made. Any proposals for an increase in the present supply would be on the basis of at least a three-year programme.

The council agreed to prohibit the use of hoses and sprinklers for private gardens till further notice.
