BOY'S FATAL DIVE

COLLISION IN WATER A collision in the water at the Shelly Beach swimming baths on January 31 of two schoolboys who had dived in about the,.s.ame..time was described at an inquest by the coroner, Mr. P. K. Hunt, this morning, into the death of Alan Gordon Dunn. Dunn, who was 13 years of age, and whose parents reside at 330, Ponsonby Road, was admitted to the Auckland Hospital suffering from a fractured spine. He died at that institution on February 19.

Robert Spittlehouse, aged 13, whose parents reside at 4, Scott Street, Poiisonby, said he jumped from the second platform of the diving board at the baths and was just coming to the surface of the water when he was struck by Dunn. The force of the blow made witness quite dizzy, but the only injury received was a lump on the top of his head. In his opinion Dunn jumped for the same opening as witness did, but, as the other boy took off from the top platform, witness hit the water first and Dunn landed on top of him.

The coroner returned a verdict that the boy died as a result of injuries accidentally received.
