SEQUEL TO STRIKE
Rec. 1.30 p.m. SYDNEY, this day. Eighteen summonses for absenteeism have been issued against textile strikers. About 6500 textile workers, mostly women, are still idle in Sydney in defiance of the union orders. Prosecutions are intended against the ringleaders.
A general strike in the woollen, worsted and cotton sections of the textile industry in Sydney was declared on February 26. As a result important war contracts will be held up. This is one of the most serious disruptions to Australia's war effort which has yet occurred. The strike has occurred because the employees objected to delays in the finalising of their award claims. Women employees, comprising about 70 per cent of >the adult employees in the industry, are seeking 90 per cent of the male rave of pay. The present rate for a female machine operator is £2 19/9 a week, as against £5 5/ for a male machine operator. An increase of 6/ a week is being sought in the male rate of pay.
