UNDER CONTROL
ANCILLARY VEHICLES
NEW REGULATION IN FORCE
Owing: to the necessity to conserve as far as possible the heavier class of tyres and also avoid heavy consumption of petrol, a new 1 ~illation comes into force as from to-day under the Transport Act. It apolies •o all ancillary vehicles, that is those bearing the H number plate on -ticks not carrying goods for hire or reward. Exceptions have been provided for under the regulation, including users such as the Crown, the armed forces, Government Departments, local authorities. public bodies, county councils, town boards and trucks engaged entirely in thf carriage of commodities such as meat, bread, milk, coal and firewood, groceries, drapery, dry cleaning, cream and in undertakers' work. It was announced to-day by the No. 1 Transport Authority, Mr. E. J. Phelan, that on and after March 12 traffic inspectors will contact all drivers of H plate trucks and those who come within the Transport Goods Emergency Regulations. Any not holding an acknowledgment of receipt of application form or a license will be issued with traffic offence notices. Mr. Phelan will hold a scries of meetings throughout his entire area to cope with the applications as expeditiously as possible. It is estimated that' in Auckland city alone there will be 2000 applications to be dealt with at public hearings. The new regulation has thrown an extremely heavy strain on the available staff of the Department in Auckland, but everything is being handled as expeditiously as possible, and no delay is likely to be caused to the truck owners.
