FARMERS PROTEST
Australian Dairy Subsidy Dubbed "Charity"
HIGHER RETURN SOUGHT
Rec. 9.30 a.m. CANBERRA, this day
Australian dairymen have criticised the £2.000.000 annual subsidy provided in the Dairying Assistance Bill which has been passed without amendment by both Houses, despite Opposition criticism.
At a special meeting In New South Wales speakers described the subsidy as "charity" and "the dole." The meeting asked for an increase of 6d a lb for butter to producers to give them an "Australian standard of living."
In the Senate the Customs Minister, Mr. Keane, said the subsidy might mean an increase of 10/ a week to dairy farmers. It would give producers lid a lb more for butter. Up to the present the return to butter producers had been about 1/1-1/2 per lb. There are stated to be 64,000 dairy farmers in Australia, so the subsidy means an average additional payment to farmers of about £30 a year.
