WELLINGTON TRAIN SERVICE

"Viator's" letter of October 7 is much to the point. The recently arranged departure of the Sunday train from Auckland to Wellington at 3 p.m. instead of 7.15 p.m. has the additional advantage that it immeasurably improves the connections from Auckland to the South Island. On the other hand it labours from the minor disadvantage that it somewhat impairs the connection from Auckland to Hawke's Bay. A 3 pjn. instead of a 7.15 p.m. departure of the Sunday train from Wellington would give much improved connections from Wellington and the South Island to Auckland and the far north. To alter the departure time of the 3 p.m. Saturday Auckland-Wellington Express at 7.15 p.m. would improve existing Saturday connections from North Auckland, Rotorua and Bay of Plenty to the South; and such an alteration appears to carry no disadvantages whatsoever, except the extra payment for additional Sunday hours involved. To alter the departure time of the 3 p.m. Saturday Wellington to Auckland express to 7.15 p.m. would immeasurably improve connections from the South Island to Auckland, as well as the connections from the Napier, Waixarapa and Taranaki districts, and such an alteration would appear to carry no disadvantages if the morning train to Helensville were delayed to give the connection.
