OBITUARY

HON. G. F. TOWNSHBJiD

Hie death has occurred of the Bon. George Ferrars Townshend, aged 88, of Keihana Avenue, Orakei. Born-in Gruernsey, he was the son of the Revi Lord George Osborne came to New Zealand In 1877 with' ,ls widowed mother and two orothers. Soon after arriving in New Zealand Mr. Townshend joined the Lands and Survey Department, and continued serving with that Department until he retired a few years ago. He resided in Devonport for over 60 years.

Mr. Townshend was heir presumptive *to the 24-year-old Marquis now serving with the British forces, and who has a young daughter. The new heir presumptive to the title is Mr Ferrars Osborne Townshend, of Wairnana Avenue, Northcote, eldest son of the late Mr. G. F. Townshend. ihree other sons survive. One lives at Devonport, another in Auckland and the third in Sydney. Four daughters reside in Auckland, and there are two brothers in New Zealand. Mr. G. F. Townshend was an uncle of the late General Sir Charles Townshend, defender of Kut. Mr. Townshend was an enthusiastic yachtsman, a keen fisherman and a sportsman with a reputation throughout New Zealand. He also painted in oils.
