NOT WANTED ON LAND
Four girls who enlisted recently with a request that they be drafted to the land army were assigned to a lipstick factory. Another girl who enlisted for land duties was told that her services would not be required for a year.
These facts were made known by Miss C. Pilkington at yesterday's meeting of the Public Opinion Group. Miss Pilkington was replying to a question whether the Housewives' Association would create a pool of women workers to help with the harvesting of vegetable crops.
"Action was taken in this matter in 1940," Miss Pilkington said. "The association approached the Women's War Service Auxiliary with a request that, as the auxiliary was training a squad of women for fruit picking, it should also enlist a group to aid the market gardeners.
"The placement officer replied that the majority of market gardens in Auckland were worked by Chinese, and the casual labour was recruited from Maori women, so that there was no anticipated shortage in that direction."
