DEATH OF MR. C. CHAAFE
A link between the older and modern schools of racing has been severed by the death at Hastings last week of Mr. Charles Chaafe. He was the son of the late John Chaafe, who for many years was one of the Dominion's premier trainers, and like all the latter's sons, he served an early apprenticeship with his father before being sent later to learn a trade. During his riding days Mr. Chaafe met with fair success, but after learning his trade he was too heavy to take up riding again, and so went to Hawke's Bay, acting as foreman to John Rae, then private trainer to the late G. P. Donnelly. Other establishments also employed him in a similar position till eventually he was granted a trainer's license to act as private trainer to the late Mr. James Landells. Fifteen years ago he gave the racing game best.
