RUGBY IN THE SOUTH

Narrow Victory Again.—A Press Association message states that Canterbury defeated Otago by 16 points to 15 in a Rugby game which at times was full of interest with fast, open play by both I sides. For Canterbury, Argus, Pearson and Kerr scored tries. Morgan converting two and kicking a penalty goal. For Otago, Paewai scored a try which Trevathan converted, and he also kicked two penalty goals and potted a goal. In the first spell Otago had the better of the play, its forwards securing the ball more frequently in the scrums, and the backs were well served by Paewai. The slowr.ess of the five-eighths did not give the speedy three-quarters a chance, and the Canterbury backs tackled solidly. At halftime Otago led 12—10. Canterbury showed renewed vigour in the second spell, when Otago seemed to tire. The best back on the field was Paewai. the elusive Maori half-back. Trevathan added to his great record of kicking by gaining 12 points, and he narrowly missed with a grand pot from half-way. When the teams met at Carisbrock on July 25 Canterbury won 19—15, a potted goal right on time. o
