PRICE OF WATER

What an indictment it is on the cost of water in Auckland that recently the Wellington Hospital Board received an offer of 8d per 1000 gallons to supply the new Hutt Valley Hospital with 80,000 gallons daily, which would be used when the building was completed. The Auckland Hospital pays 1/3 per 1000 gallons for the enormous amount of water it uses, probably a million gallons some weeks, and the Infirmary pays 1/2, although for a long period it paid 1/6 per 1000 gallons. The reduction came when the board put down a l#ore of their own. What a saving would be made if the Kara-piro-Taupo scheme could be completed to produce water at 6d per 1000 gallons! Manufacturers, laundries. and everybody else would benefit. Public opinion from all over the large area to be served by the proposed scheme should compel the abandoning of former old methods, which were never suitable for a Greater Auckland supplv. W. K. HOWITT.
