TRAMWAY WORKERS

MEN ON WAR DUTIES

WAGES SUBSIDY SOUGHT

Several matters were brought before the Auckland Transport Board at a meeting this morning by a deputation representing the Auckland branch of the Tramways' Union, and the Engineers' Union.

The deputation urged that a subsidy should be given to men on war duties, and asked that no man should be penalised for time lost attending medical examination for same. The board was also asked to consider granting a holiday period, on pay, to men returning from war service overseas.

A further request put forward by the deputation was that the running time on all routes should be overhauled with a view to extending same.

The secretary of the Tramways' Union, Mr. F. Hackett, said that the main question was a subsidy to bring pay up to normal when on military service.

Other speakers for the deputation were the president of the union, Mr. J. Hoole. and vice-president, Mr. E. Whitlow.

The board went into committee to discuss running times.

When the board resumed the chairman, Mr. J. Sayegh, said the representations would be referred to a committee, and would receive full consideration.

It was decided to discuss the matters raised at a meeting next Monday morning, when a report would be made by the engineer and manager, Mr. A. E. Ford.
