CORRESPONDENTS' VIEWS

DEFENCE (To the Editor) In view of the success of the Japanese campaign in the Pacific it seems to me there is a very definite challenge to us younger people. The Japanese, with their low standard of living and poor working conditions are capable of fanatical deeds supreme sacrifice of their live? Sure ly, it seems to me. we younger people should have ever so mu~h more reason for this tvpe of behaviour a successful defence of New Zealand must depend lareelv on our ability to cope with enemV transports, warships and aircraft carriers. We have limited man. power and resources, and it seem* to me that the most economical wav of dealing effectively with any seL borne invasion or raid is the formation of a suicide squad to be ready at all times. I suggest that an immediate call for sucn a squad would not be in vain. REALIST.

The co-operation of E.P.S. worker* would be closer if some branches were supplied with the necessarv equipment. One is passed from the chief warden to a St. John's official then on to the Hospital Board, on a' request for blankets for a clearing station, but nothing happens. <5f course there is a possibility that New Zealand may be trying a freezing cure for traumatic shock and will stitch up wounds with bootlaces. Confusion does not rhyme with New Zealand breed, but let as have the wherewithall to patch ap the spots. k.
