HOLIDAY CRUISING
Beyond the advice not to go far ofTshore, there are no restrictions imposed by the naval authorities on the extent of nohday cruising by yachts or launches. The present regulations regarding reporting to the examination vessels in the Rangitoto and Motokoreo Channels when returning to port are to be strictly observed and all skippers are advised to have their permits and registration numbers on board.
While the coastline from Auckland to Russell or further north and eastward to Tauranga is open to yachtsmen, there will be few if any going outside the limits of the Hauraki Gulf, which is generally considered as south of a line from Rodnev Point to Cape Colville. This is about 60 miles in length by 30 miles wide, givinjr approximately 1800 square miles of cruising ground. The area defined includes Hawaii, Mahurangi. Waiheke and the Coromandel and Tnames coasts. With the ban on petrol few motor boats will be away, but a number of the sailing fleet have managed to collect a crew and w, rl\ be off . evening for a cruise. The principal regatta, except Auckland's Annnersary Day fixture on January 29 to be held during the holidays is the regatta at Tauranga on Boxing Dav. This has been held in conjunction with the raCe fr ° m Auckland to The Mount for the past 21 years, bilt this vear, as last the contests wiJl be confined'to local yachts with a few 14-footers and Idle Alongs from Opotiki and Rotorua. and Silver Ferns from Hamilton, if transport arrangements are available. -
