TRENCHES IN CITY

EXTENSIVE OPERATIONS

Workmen of the Auckland City Council have completed 10,100 lineal feet of shelter trenches during the past 10 days, a distance of nearly two miles, and there is now accommodation for over 5000 people. Work has also been done bv railday employees at the Auckland railway station, and by Harbour Board gangs at the old dock site.

"When the council's large nroiect at Victoria Park, is completed, it is probable that trenches will be made in other open spaces, near crowded areas, in which most backyards are too small for the construction of open shelters.-
