"SLIT TRENCHES OR HOME"

Can you please tell many of os what the trenches are for? We read how to try and save our homes if necessary from fire, and, yet. we are told to dig trenches. Now, firstly, I have no room for a trench or a nan to dig one. Are we expected to leave our homes and make for the trenches, or stay put, and try and put any fires out? I have asked many people and "most are under the impression that the trenches are for people caught away from home If w why the trenches in the back garden. "NOT UNDERSTOOD"
