STATE WORKERS

LOWER-SCALE EMPLOYEES HIGHER PAY FROM JANUARY (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Friday. Following on representations from organisations representing the Government employees, the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser. announced to-night that rates of pay have been examined and that it has been decided to increase the wages of those on the lower scale. The new rates, when determined, will operate from January 1. Mr. Fraser added that it had also been decided, with a view to assisting people on low and fixed incomes, to extend the list of goods on the stabilised list of commodities that would not be permitted to increase in price. If these articles increase in cost subsidies will be provided by the Government in order to keep prices from rising. The Government was also considering the question of widening the powers of the Arbitration Court beyond those possessed by it at present to enable it to make provision for lower-paid workers as distinct from a general order.
