BALLROOM SCENE

DIPLOMATIC CONTRETEMPS LONDON, Nov. 2. The Turkish Republic Day Ball in Ankara produced a diplomatic contretemps, reports the Associated Press correspondent in Ankara. Mrs. O'Donnell, wife of the British naval attache, Captain G. O'Donnell, who served in H.M.S. Chatham in New Zealand from 1920 to 1923. encountered Frau von Papen, wife of the German Ambassador, on the ballroom floor. They duly turned their backs on each other, as befitted the wives of enemy diplomats.

Unfortunately, both women were wearing beribboned and brocaded fancy dresses, and the ribbons became entwined as dancers jostled them, coupling the wearers like Siamese twins. A British diplomat hovered ineffectually near by until someone rushed up with a representative of the Turkish Protocol Department and uncoupled the women. Meanwhile they stood like statues without exchanging a word.
