SKIPTON'S DERBY
Outstays Laureate And High Road
BURRABIL'S CANTALA WIN MELBOURNE, November 2. Stamina was the deciding factor in the success of Skipton in the Victoria Derby on the opening day of the Victoria Racing Club's spring meeting at Flemington yesterday, when the weather was line and there was an enormous attendance. Skipton, who was third to last at one stage, challenged the leaders two furlongs from home and finally won by a length and a quarter. Laureate was responsible for n game effort in running second, but Skipton was going away at the end. High Road showed that his form in the Caulfield Guineas was all wrong by running a good third. Primavera finished fast for fourth, registering a great trial for the Oaks, which will be run on Thursday. Gay Revelry ran a fair race, but the others were outclassed. Owned by Woman Skipton is trained by the former New Zea lander, ,1. Fryer, for Mrs. J. J. Kitson. The only previous Derby winner owned by a woman was Patrobas, who carried the colours of Mrs. E. A. VViddis. Skipton enhanced his chance in the Melbourne Cup, but a great deal depends upon how he fares over the week-end, as throughout his career he has always felt the effects of a hard race. Skipton cost 250 guineas as a yearling and has now won £4642 in stakes. He has scored four wins in his last five starts. Kelos surprised by leading throughout In the Wakeful Stakes, holding off challenges from Wheat Sheaf and Two's Company and winning narrowly. Hesione, the half-sister to Ajax, scored her third win in three starts when she scored in the Maribyrnong Plate. She has now won £2400. It was rider D. Munro's third successive win in the race, which trainer B. Payten won previously with Fidelity. Sllvermane improved on recent form, but had no chance with the placed horses.
Beau Vlte led all the way for his second successive win the L. K. S. Macklnnon Stakes. El Golea and Lucrative challenged two furlongs from home, but Beau Vite answered gamely, holding his rivals safely at the finish. Tranquil Star was outclassed. El Golea surprised by his good effort. Lucrative made a fair showing. He is suited better by handicap conditions. Beau Vite has now won £26,215 in stakes. He ran the last half-mile in 46]s. Burrabil in Form Burrabil scored the most important success of his career in winning the Cantata Stakes. Rimveil finished well for second and appeared unlucky. Evergreen was third after having every chance. High Caste was hemmed in on the rails in the straight, otherwise he might have won. Amiable ran poorly. Crojick finished well after being last at the home turn. Son of Aurous, carrying a stone above his Melbourne Cup weight, ran a great trial in winning the Hotham Handicap, beating Yodvara in the last few strides after being last at the home turn. Triggerman weakened into third. Saul finished fairly, but Son of Aurous should hold yesterday's rivals safely in the Cup.
