THE BROWNLIES AND NEPIA REAPPEAR
Gisborne Patriotic Game
On Saturday next at Gisborne an "old-timers" Rugby match will be staged for the patriotic funds between past Poverty Bay representatives and a team of players who are being called "outsiders." They were on the "inner" once, as the outside includes Maurice and Cyril Brownlie, George Nepia, "Jimmy" Mill, Don Wright and Henry Brown. The first four were members of the 1924 All Blacks, who won all of their 30 games in Britain and France. "Wright went to Australia with the 1925 New Zealand team and Brown was in the 1935 side which toured the United Kingdom. A brother of the last-named player, Handley Brown (Taranaki) was also one of the 1924 "Invincibles." Other "outsiders" are: — R. S. Stacey, New Zealand 'Varsity 1933, Auckland 1929-33; P. Brady, Auckland League representative, selected to represent New Zealand in Australia, but unable to make the trip; A. Toye, Auckland Marist 1934, now Poverty Bay selector; R. Julian, Auckland 1933-34, later Poverty Bay; I. Charles, representative Southland, Wanganui, Hawke's Bay; I. Bramwell, Manawatu 1919-22, King Country 1922, Wellington 1924-25-26, Poverty Bay 1927-28; L. Martin, New Zealand 'Varsity, Canterbury and Poverty Bay; M. P. H. Davies, North Island, Auckland, Waikato, combined Bay of Plenty and Poverty Bay; R. Philpotts, North Otago Rugby, All Black hockey 1923 and 1929.
