GENEVA REPORT

PRISONERS OF WAR

ENCOURAGING MESSAGE

Encouraging news has been re-

ccivcd from Geneva respecting some of the Y.M.C.A. workers with the troops who were posted as missing after the actions in Greece and Crete. The advice has particular reference to Mr. F. E. S. ("Em."') Long, of Christchurch. who was captured in Greece, and is now a prisoner in Germany.

The Wellington Y.M.C.A. secre- ; tary, Mr. R. M. Blasted, has for- ' warded to Mr. V. T. Drew, secretary of the Auckland Y.M.C.A., a letter which has been received from Mr. D. A. Davis, of the World Y.M.C.A. Alliance in Geneva, stating that he had received a postcard from Mr. Long, dated June 25 and intimating, that he was a prisoner of war in ' Germany. The postcard reads:— "Greetings! 1 would be glad to see you or our Munich representative . same time. Will you cable Brasted, Wellington, that I am a prisoner? i Ask him to advise my mother. Endeavour to secure information ! relative safety other New Zealand representatives from Greece. In need of clothing and extra foodstuffs. Can you help? Regards.— Ern Long, senior secretary X.Z., ' Y.M.C.A." !

Mr. Davis advised that he had got in touch with London in respect to Mr. Long's appeal, and that a parcel of books and foodstuffs had been dispatched, while he presumed that! Red Cross parcels would also soon • reach the prisoners in this camp. I He added that no clothing of any sort could be exported. As a final message of encouragement to New Zealanders Mr. Davis adds that Y.M.C.A. workers announced as prisoners of war include J. Ledgerwood (Hamilton). I. Mclver and D. Hunter (Auckland) and Alan MacLachlan (Australia). "I am reliably informed that there are possibly as many as 5000 Austra-; Hans and New Zealanders who are : now reported as missing from: battles in the Near East who will , one dav come home safe and sound," j he adds. "I pass on this unconfirmed report so that families should not worry because they get no news nor even'the prison addresses of loved ones." I
