REPORTED KILLED
BROADWOOD FARMER REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALLER Advice has been received by Mrs. L. P. Ling, of Swanspn, that her son, Corporal Robert Joseph Ling, has been reported killed in action on May 25.
Born in Dargaville, Corporal Ling was 25 years of age. He was educated at the Ellerslie Primary School and Auckland Grammar School, and later took up farming on his own account in the Broadwood (North Auckland) district. On the outbreak of the war he enlisted for the Royal
New Zealand Air Force, but when advised that a long time would elapse before he could be admitted he enlisted in the army. He then leased his farm, and left New Zealand with an early infantry unit.
Corporal Ling took a keen interest in Rugby and cricket, and for several seasons was a North Auckland Rugby representative, playing as hooker and front row forward. He was a member of the North Auckland team which made such a good showing against the last Springboks side to visit the Dominion. He was also wicket-keeper for the Broadwood cricket eleven.
