COULD NOT SERVE
GERMANY HIS COUNTRY
CIVIL, SERVANT'S APPEAL (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter. 1 WELLINGTON", this day. A declaration that there was no | room inside the civil service for anyone who would not serve Now Zealand to the full was made by the acting-Prime Minister. Mr. Nash, in the House of Representatives yesterday in replying to an urgent question 1 by Mr. Broadfoot 'National. Waitomo). Mr. Broadfoot asked whether it was the Government's intention to retain in its employ civil servants who objected to perform military service and referred to a case which came before the Armed Forces Appeal Board in Wellington this week. This was the case of Ernest Jakob 1 Volz. Mr. Broadfoot asked whether j Volz was to continue in his employment as an accountant's clerk in the] Land and Income Tax Department I after declaring, according to the Press, to the Armed Forces Appeal Board, that he regarded Germany as his own country and that he could not bring himself to fight against Germans. Mr. Nash referred to the course laid down for those who wished to appeal against military service, and said that if appeals on the grounds of conscience were sustained the appellants were ordc::-'! to perform alternative service. That provision had only recently come into operation. With regard to the case quoted, inquiries were being made and he would be glad to find Out what was to |be done to a person of that type because they could not have anyone
inside the public service who would not serve New Zealand to the full. (Hear, hears.)
