INSCRIBED LETTER.

TRIBUTE TO TREASURER. Appreciation of the patriotic work of Mr. C. 11. Battlev was warmly expressed at a meeting last night of the Auckland provincial committee of the joint council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society. Mr. Battlev. as treasurer, had undertaken much of the heavy work in connection with the sick and wounded appeal. His work-was highly praised by menvbers, and a resolution was carried recording the committee's appreciation, and the decision to have a letter sent to Mr. Battlev in terms of the resolution. The chairman, .Sir Ernest Davis, offered personally to meet the expense of a suitable letter, inscribed on parchment and framed, to be forward ed to Mr. Battlev in recognition of his services.

Mr. .T. T. Paterson was elected deputy chairman of the committee, and Mr. W M. White took hi* seat as a new member of the council.
