Mr. T. U. Wells, of Auckland, is visit ing Hawke's Bay.

Mr. J. G. Stout, of Gisborne, is visit ing Auckland.

Mr. B. E. H. Whitcombc, of Ohrietchurcli, who recently returned from a visit to Australia, left by train la.it night for the south.

Mr. H. E. Worsp returned from Wellington by train this morning, after attending the monthly meeting of the New Zealand Meat Board.

Messrs. A. Ely and A. M. Seaman, past presidents of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, returned from Wellington by the Limited express this morning after attending a meeting of the executive of the Associated Ch mbers of Commerce.

The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates and Messrs. F. W. Schramm, A. S. Richards, C. R. Petrie, A. G. Osborne. C. W. Boswell and J. G. Barclay, M.P.'s, were passengers from Wellington by the Limited express this morning.

Mr. G r P. Shepherd has been appointed Deputy for the Chief Judge of the Native Land Court, and Mr. J. H. Robertson and Mr. M. V. Bell, both of Auckland, have been appointed Commissioners.

Mr. E. T. Spidy, controller of the munitions production division of the Ministry of Supply, who has been spending several days in Auckland after returning from Australia, travelled t'» Wellington by air yesterday.

The Rev. H. C. Mathew, minister of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Otahului, has resigned his post, and has been appointed deputy-superintendent of the Borstal Institution in Invercargill. Mr. Mathew acquired an extensive experience in the work while studying for the ministry in America.

Sir Charles Luke lias been appointed a commander of the Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, according to advice received from St. John's Gate by the commandery in New Zealand. Sir Charles has associated with the work of the St. John Ambulance Association in the Dominion for many years.

Sir' Walter Strinaer, chairman of the War Pensions Appeal Board since March, 1927, has tendered his resignation, and this has been accepted by the Government as from July 31, according to an announcement made by the Minister in Charge of War Pensions, the Hon. F. Jones.. Mr. Jones also announced that Sir Francis F razor had been appointed successor to Sir Walter on the board, and would assume the duties of chairman from August 1.
