TRANSPORT FOR TROOPS
I appreciate the comment of the Railways Department on my remarks in a recent issue concerning the transport arrangements for troops from Papakura camp. Nevertheless, I must accept the evidence of my own eyes and ears on the occasion referred to, Friday,
June 28, when I, and my friends who were with me, saw hundreds of men bent on finding a means of getting to the city. Motor car owners and drivers were besieged by men seeking transport. So surprised was I that I walked slowly along the street to assure myself of their purpose, which apparently was not to I get a "free" ride, as they were offering to pay for it. Indeed, the driver of the car I was in, and who picked up two lads, had the greatest difficulty in refusing money they offered—much ihore than a rail ticket would have cost them. It is satisfactory to Have received convincing evidence that since the matter was brought before the notice of the public through "The Page" a decided improvement has been reported in the facilities offered our soldiers at Papakura who wish a speedy trip to town.
