In order to conserve petrol and manpower, . the postal.' authorities have decided to abolish- night..-: clearance of postal boxes in the metropolitan area. The last night clearance will be made on Friday next,, and then- clearances will be reduced to one in the niorning, and one , in the afternoon. %:WOIt was stated this-morning , that there wore 257 posting-boxes-in the metropolitan area, and that for'night clearance three vans were engaged to make a complete round of the city awl suburbs between approximately 10 p.Wand midnight. Letters collected in the night clearance connected with trains on the following morning-, and als* with the morning letter-carrier delivery in the city and 'suburbs.
Tim day clearance will lie made as formerly in the outer areas by messengers of postmen fro»> suburban offices.
