Japanese 'planes bombed Chungking, the headquarters of Marshal Chiacy Kai-shek's Government, at 1 p.m.. to-day, destroying about 1000 houses, states a report from Chungking. ' ' Political circles in the city are stated to be disappointed with President Roosevelt's statement, in which he disclaimed any intention to interfere in any territorial problems in Europe or Asia, and favoured a Monroe Doctrine policy, for each continent.
The statement is regarded as tantamount to recognition of the Asiatic Monroe Doctrine attitude, declared by Mr. Arita, Japanese Foreign Minister.
A Washington message says Mr. Cordell Hull, United States Secretary of State, at a Press conference, said tie President's statement was not intended to define a new or modify the existing foreign policies. ;
