A Foreign Office statement on the fate of Marshal Balbo says it will be recollected that he was appointed Governor-General of Libya in 1933 because his presence in Italy was inconvenient to Mussolini. Since then Marshal Balbo has consistently opposed the policy of harnessing Italy to Hitler's war machine.
Marshal Balbo's death, in an unexplained, aeroplane disaster recalls similar accidents in the past, particularly the death of the German general, von Fritseh, who opposed Hitler's policy. The Gerinau wireless drew this parallel when it eaid: "Marshal Balbo's death •has thus occurred in the same spirit as that of General von Fritsch."
The truth will probably never be known. The only fact which can be established is that Marshal. Balbo did not perish in a cofoibat with the R.A.F.
