WIN FOR TUTOR. . PATRIOTIC MEETING. — i STAR VAAL SCORES. SOCKETTES BREAKS SHOULDER

Falling at the second fence from home when holding a good position in the, St. John Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at the Waikato .Racing Club's patriotic meeting at Tc Eapa to-day, ' the favourite,' Sockettcs, suffered a broken shoulder, and had .to bo. destroyed. The winner turned up in the Ellerslie-trained Tutor, who stayed 'on best of the others and scored a comfortable victory. The weather was fine, the attendance/ large and the track in splendid order for this period of the year. ' An Easy Win.. In the St. John Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, Etcetera tried to win all the way, but tired after jumping the last fence and Tutor beat him comfortably. The favourite, Sockettcs, was lying second at the second last fence when lie camo down, and breaking a shoulder, had to be destroyed. Etcetera went out to set the pace.and led past the stand, followed by Sockettcs and British Isles. The'last-named fell at tho fence by the seven furlongs post, where Etcetera was leading Sockettcs, tho pair being well clear of Semiareh, with Tutor moving up. When Sockettcs fell at the sod wall near the head of. the straight, Etcetera was loft with a good lead from Semiareh, Tutor and Fat Boy. The leader tired after getting over the last fence and Tutor, finishing strongly, beat him comfortably by a couple of lengths. Fat Bay was a dozen lengths away third and Inuess Lad fourth. /. Won By A Nose. There was a close finish between Star Vaal and Hum a Song in the Soldiers' Handicap, the former just getting.up in the last few strides to win by a nose. Trig Station was always prominent to .finish third, and Glcnbevan was battling on in fourth place at the judge. Hum a Song began well and led along the back from Trig Station, Star Vaal, Miss Valerie, Phil Vaals, Sweet: Nothing and Tahiti. Across tho top the order was, Hum a Song, Star Vaal, Trig Station, Miss Valerie and Lady Clorane, and the order was unchanged* into the straight. Hum a Song: led to -within.' a few strides of the post when.Star Vaal got up and beat her by a nose. Trig Station was two lengths and-a half away, - followed" by Glenbevan, Hiss Valerie," Lady Clorane and Sweet Nothing, Hot Box TJnplacld. The favourite for the Southern Queen Handicap, Hot Box, had every chance, being up third at the straight entrance, to eventually finish fourth. Flying Acre, who won a mile hack event at the last Waikato meeting, created a surprise to-, day by accounting for a useful field. He was always well placed and was second round the home turn.- Tidewaiter raced up to his best southern form, coming from a good way back to got second, Paddy the Rip set the pace past the stand from Jewelled Girdle, Philenmp, Very Glad, Hot Box, Saccone, Valminti and Flying Acre. Along the back the ordes was -the same, but crossing the top Paddy the.Rip and Jewelled Girdle were together in the. lead from Very Glad, Flying Acre, Valmint, Prival and Hot Box, Very Glad was first into the straight from Flying Acre, Hot Box and Prival. - In the run home Flying Acre headed Very Glad and went on to score by half a length from Tidewaiter, who finished well after being seventh into the straight.
