WORK AT GENEVA.
MR. JORDAN'S STAND.
MANY CONGRATULATIONS.
EXPULSION OF RUSSIA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
LOXDOK, December 18.
New Zealand has completed its three years' representation on the Council of the League of Nations, and, on the routine appointment of South Africa to succeed New Zealand, Mr. W. J. Jordan, High Commissioner, the Dominion's representative, received many congratulations from foreign Ministers and others attending for the stand he had taken on the many subjects with which the Council has dealt. *
The Assembly was unanimous in referring to the Council the question of the expulsion of Russia from the League and the matter was finally decided by the Council.
At a meeting of the Council, prior to his retirement, Mr. Jordan expressed his regret at the necessity for the action which was being taken, and commented that it seemed remarkable that Russia had been among the foremost in condemning nations which had made unprovoked attacks on small Powers, and was now herself guilty of the crime which she had condemned in others. Mr. I Jordan regretted this action, as it would jbe far better to have nations returning jto the League than leaving it. Nevertheless, he expressed the opinion that the League will yet function, and that I nations will settle their differences j rather by an appeal to reason than by force.
Mr. Jordan was at Geneva when new* came through of the Graf Spee engagement, and many foreign representatives expressed to him their admiration of jthe part played by the Achilles, with its New Zealanders fighting side by side 1 with men of the Mother Country.
