AMAZING CROWDS.
VISIT THE NORTH STAR.
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Byrd expedition vessel North Star was generously thrown open to the public to-day. They pushed and scrambled abroad in amazing numbers, and it was difficult to move about. Every part not roped off was full of children and young and old plying the patient officers with innumerable silly questions, peering inside the cabins, and patting the huskies, which were greatly admired. The boys were generally more taken with the big Curtiss Condor biplane on the after deck, and the snow cruiser, with its enormous tyres. Rear-Admiral Byrd received a number of officials aboard, and later he visited the acting Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Fraser, to whom he extended an invitation to visit the ship. He lunched with the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, Sir Harry Batterbee. Though the time of sailing has not been fixed, the ship is expected to leave to-morrow morning.
