BROTHERS FINED.

BOTH INTOXICATED.

AFTER SISTER'S WEDDING.

COLLISION WITH PARKED OAR

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

WHANG ARE I, this day. Two brothers, John and William Pole, aged 20 and 19 respectively, both of Kaikohe, were fined £25 each in the Kaikohe Police Court yesterday, when they were charged with driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of liquor. Their licenses were cancelled for three years. Both accused pleaded guilty to the charges. Constable Robertson, outlining the circumstances, said that on Decembftr 20 the brothers had motored from Wliangarei to' Kaikohe to attend their sister's wedding. "They consumed more liquor than was good for them at the function," he said, "and later left for Whangarei. John Pole, who owned the car, realised that he was too intoxicated to drive and handed the wheel over to his brother. They were proceeding down Broadway, Kaikohe, when the driver swerved to tha left to avoid colliding with a bus and hit the side of a parked car. There were two ladies and one man in the car, the latter being slightly injured. The accused did not stop to investigate the damage, but continued on down the road." Constable J. Frain, who witnessed the collision, commandeered a car and caught up to them on the Ohaeawai highway, witness stated. He then noticed thcin to be under the influence of liquor. Evidence was given that two doctors found the brothers to be unlit for driving. "This is a very serious charge and the Bench admonishes you both to abstain from alcohol in the future," said Mr. J. Bedggood, J.P. "You must consider yourselves lucky that you are not charged with the more serious offence of failing to stop after an accident," he said.
