OBSCURE POEM.

Origin Of King's Christmas

Quotation.

WOMAN WAS AUTHOR.

(Received 11 a.m.) RUGBY, December 27. Widespread interest has been aroused as to the authorship of the little known quotation with which the King concluded his Empire broadcast on Christmas Day. It is stated that the King himself was unaware of the authorship of the lines, but it now appears that the passage was published in a letter to "The Times," on September 9, from a correspondent who found it written on a postcard among the effects of a Bristol doctor, who is now dead, and who thought it opportune that it should be reproduced just after the outbreak of the war. It was not until nearly midnight, however, that the name of the author became known. The 8.8.C. then announced that the words were written by Miss M. L. Haskings, of Crownborough, Sussex. They were written before the last war and formed part of a poem which served as an introduction to some verses privately printed and circulated by the author in aid of an Indian charity.
