Country Week Cricket

ANOTHER HAT-TRICK. SUCCESS OF COUTTS.

STACE CARRIES BAT FOR 79. CAPITAL DOUBLE BY WINTER. After the third round of the Country Week cricket tournament at the Domain yesterday the points were:—Pukekohe 12, Thames 9, Waipa 7, Waihi and Rodney 6, Rangitaiki and Hamilton 4. The principal game yesterday was the meeting of the two leading Xl.'s, Pukekohe beating Thames by 130 runs. Waihi, thinks to tine bowling by F. Wilkes and a classic knock by captain Peter Stace, scored the side's first victory at the carnival, finishing up 29 runs ahead. The match between Waipa and Hamilton was drawn, rain at 5.30 driving the players off the tield. At that stage Hamilton required 48 to win, with live wickets in hand. , Auckland easily beat Rodney, who, playing a man short, were annihilated on a wet wicket, which W. J. Dunning erroneously decided to use first when he won the toss. The "Lion-killers." Stace's 79, not out, was the best batting performance of the day. The most successful bowler was . the young left-arm spinner, M. Burgess, of Pukekohe, who took eight Thames wickets for 48. A. Coutfs, Rangataiki, with the last three balls of his final over, performed the hattrick against Waihi—two stumped and one lbw. Another fine knock (65) was that of J. Oien, a Maori student at a college in the Pukekohe district. Two more Maoris batted with distinction—B. Paul and B. White, both for Waihi. R. Harold, the Y.M.C.A. second grade skipper, tilling a vacancy for Waihi, played splendid innings on Tuesday and Wednesday. He also was one of Auckland's most successful batsmen on Christmas Day. W. M. Winter, the Auckland captain, at one stage of Rodney's innings yesterday, took three wickets with four balls. He followed thfs fine bowling effort up with an innings of 53. after which he retired. K. S. Arkinstall, the former Brabin Cup and Middlemore senior player, bowled successfully for the Auckland eleven yesterday. He was heartily farewelled by his comrades before leaving the Domain to catch the train back to Trentham Military Camp, where he is attached to the Army Service Corps.
