AN ATTRACTIVE EFFORT.

HORSES AT TAKANINI

All fast work at Tak-anini this morning took place on the inside grass track and weather conditions were perfect. As the final gallops take place to-morrow there was not nearly as much work as usual.

Jack Tar (Mellroy) was the first out and came home from the five furlong post in 1.6 1-5. Assisted by Sunpai (Cleaver) oyer the last half mile in 51s, Paddy the Rip (Gray) completed seven furlongs in 1.29 3-5. Gay Movie (Beguely) worked well while traversing a mile in 1.44 3-5, the first four furlongs being covered in 50 4-sb. Hunting Bee (Cleaver) and Ascot Bloom (Gray) got to the end of six furlongs in 1.16 1-5, the last half mile being traversed in 50s. Bachelor King (Kingi) was doing better than Vaalsstar (Bartie) and Lady Fox (T. Green) at the conclusion of five furlongs in 1.2 2-5. The Railway Handicap candidate, Bronwen (Spinley), worked attractively over six furlongs in 1.13 3-5, her first three taking 34 3-ss. Buccaneer (Hatwell) got the best of the start with her when he joined her at the three furlongs and he held his advantage to the finish. On the Plough. Mia Acrea (Pell) completed seven furlongs in 135 3-5, and Philcourt (Beguely) and Dauber (Bartle) were associated in a similar task which took 1.34. Noisy Night (Pell) did strong work over a mile, his last five furlongs taking 1.7 2-5. Penzance (Spinley) was under a hold throughout six furlongs in 1.19. In a similar task Maxam (Spinley) worked freely to record 1.16 3-5.

In reply to a question this morning, F. Smith stated that no decision would be made as to which horse, Orelio or Arvakur, would contest the Railway Handicap until after the final gallops tomorrow.
