AUCKLAND ALL OUT

BAD START.

SHIELD CRICKET.

134 AT WELLINGTON.

NEW CAPTAIN TOP-SCORER-

FAST BOWLER STARTS ROT.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. W. M. Wallace, the new captain of Auckland, holder of the Plunket Shield for the previous three seasons t won the toss from E. G. McLeod at the Basin Reserve this morning, and elected to bat. The teims are:— Auckland.—W. M. Wallace, P. E. Whitelaw, H. T. Pearson, G. L. Weir, V. S. Sale, V. J. Scott, A. M. Matheson, J. A. R. Blandford, C. E. Burke, J. Cowie, D. C. Cleverly. C. P. Howden is twelfth man. Wellington.—E. G. McLeod, V. H. du Chateau, E. W. Tindill, W. Hepburn, W. G. Rainbird, J. R. Lamaaon, J. A. Ongley, W. F. Airey, D. S. Wilson, T. L. Pritchard, J. Ashenden. O. Wrigley is welftk man. The weather was fine but cloudy, with a gusty northerly breeze. Auckland started disastrously. Whitelaw snicked the first ball of Pritchards third over to Wilson, at second slip, and one wicket was down for 8, of which he had made 2.

Four runs later Pearson, who had <been joined by Sale, could not get over the fifth ball of Ashenden's third over and was skittled with his score at 6. Two wickets were down for 12 runs. Then the complexion of the game changed somewhat, Sale and Wallace going for the bowling. Wallace excelled in strong drives on both sides of the wicket. He opened with two boundaries and Auckland's 50 was hoisted in 49 minutes. When Wallace passed 40 he had eight fours to his credit. Things were looking very bright, as Wallace scattered the crowd with well-timed pulls and punches. ,The partnership, however, did not last, as veteran Lamason relieved Ashenden at the south end, and in his second over he combined with Tindill to send Sale back to the pavilion at 14. The score then was 09. Auckland's luck appeared to be failing again, for Wallace drove to Du Chateau at cover and became another Lamason victim—four down for 76. Weir and Scott then became associated and the batting was quieter. Scores: — AUCKLAND. —First Innings.
