STOP PROFITEERING.

TREASURY ' SUSPICIOUS

(Received 10 a.m.)

LONDON, December 20.

The official report of evidence given before the Select Committee on Estimates reveals that the Under-Secretary to the Treasury, Sir Alan Barlow, told the Committee last March that the Treasury had a suspicion that machine tool-makers engaged in the national defence programme were making excessive profits.

This was met r by a blank refusal from those suspected to submit their books to costing. The money involved was pretty considerable and the Government would have to consider taking legislative powers.
