YAWL DELAYED.
GALE ENCOUNTERED.
THEN THREE CALM DAYS.
ROUND WORLD CRUISERS.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
GISBORNE, this day.
A nortli-easterly gale early in the voyage, ana later calm weather at the East Cape, resulted in long delays for the 11-ton, 35ft, auxiliary yawl Caplin, which left Auckland on December (5 for Nelson in continuation of a world cruisc.
The craft put into Gisborne to-day for fresh stores.
Commander R. D. Graham, R.N., accompanied by his 24-year-old daughter Marguerite, had planned to spend the Christmas season with friends at Nelson. However, they had the misfortune to experience a severe north-easterly gale after rounding Cape Colville, and they sheltered for several days at Kennedy's Bay, Coromandel Peninsula.
For the run across the Bay of Plenty they were favoured with a fair wind, and they had an excellent passage to the East Cape. The wind dropped there and for three days and a half" they were practically drifting between the cape and cable end foreland.
Although there were ample tinned stores aboard the yawl for the remainder of the trip to Nelson, it was decided to call at Gisborne for fresh food, and the craft's 8 h.p. motor was put into use to bring the boat into port. Commander Graham still hopes to reach Nelson for Christmas should a favourable wind prevail.
