(From Our Correspondent.)
OHKISTCHUKOH. Monday
One of the ticst-known officers in the ] shipping business in Now Zealand. Cliptain A. J. Charman, Marine Superintendent to the Shaw Savill and Albion Company, Limited, for the South Island, will retire at the end of this year, after 50 years' unbroken service with the company. Captain Charman went to sea as an apprentice in one of the company ssailing vessels in September, 1881). He rose to the position of *hief officer in sail and commanded many of the company's vessels on the England-Australia-New Zealand tun before taking his present position 10 years ago. For a sailor of his years of experience Captain Charman's voyages have followed remarkably restricted lines. It was only during the war that he was off the England-New Zealand run. During that time, however, he had enough excitement for a lifetime, and just before the end of the war his vessel was torpedoed in tho English Channel.
