CAPTAINS ALL.

FUN IN PARLIAMENT.

STEERING THE SHIP OF STATE.

( B.v Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.! WELLINGTON, this day. Recent statements attributed to Mr. J. G. Coates (National, Kaipara) at a political meeting to the effect that former captains of the of State had been thrown on the scrap heap and that he was willing to assume command once more, provided Mr. W. J. Lyon (Government, Waitemata) with the opportunity for some verbal sport that the House of Representatives greatly enjoyed last night.

Mr. Lyon asked how Mr. Forbes (National, Hurunui) liked a statement of that sort as he sat on his scrap heap in the House, and added that Mr. Coates had apparently overlooked other captains in the party. There were Messrs. Hamilton (Leader of the Opposition), Holland (National, Christchurch North), and several others.

Mr. D. W. Coleman (Government, Gisborne): Too many captains for a small craft.

Mr. Lyon: But Mr. Coates is ready to lead them somewhere, somehow, sometime.

Mr. «T. A. Lee (Government, Grey Lvnn). I hope you have not overlooked Captain Kidd. (Laughter.)
