RANFURLY SHIELD.
MAWAWATU'S CHALLENGE FAILS. SNOW AT ONE END OF FIELD. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") , INVERCARGILL, Saturday, t In the second Ranftirly Shield match of - the season Southland beat Manawatu by 17 points to 3. At half-time the twenty-five which had been defended by Southland was still covered with snow (which fell during the curtain-raiser), except for the full-back's footprints. For Southland Sutherland and Saxton scored tries in the first half. Wesney converted Sutherland's try, and then left the field with a leg injury. Ward kicked a penalty goal and scored a try in the second half, and Sutherland scored his second try. Five minutes before the end Manawatu crossed Southland's twenty-five for the first time in the game, and J. Finlay kicked a penalty goal. r! Apparently the final Kanfurly Shield challenge of the season will be by Ashburton on August 20, that union nearly lifting the trophy from Southland in a sensational match at the end of last year There is a possibility, however, that th« return Otago-Southland game, at Dunedin on September 30, may be for the shield.
