EDWARDS TROPHY T(1 HOUSTON. The handicap match play competition for the Edwards Trophy was brought to a conclusion yesterday at Akarana. when I. W. Houston (8) defeated T. J. I.awson («) on the 3<>tli green by the narrow margin of one up. I.awson held a slight advantage throughout the morning round, and witli the match half finished he held a one hole lead. Houston, however, squared the pame in winning the opening hole in the afternoon. rind lie then took the lead for the first time in notching a further win at the 21st. I.awson returned to the attack to take the 22m1. 23rd and 24tli. and he held i his two up lead to the turn. The 2Stli saw Houston reduce the deficit to one witli 11 well played f(jur. and he squared the inairfi at the -JOth ill four to five. Houston took the lead when lie holed an awkward mi t f for a three at the 31st. hut he lost this advantage when he mishit his tee shot at the 33n|. I.awson suuaring with a good four. Both played the short 34 th weakly, a half in four resulting, while at tile 3.")tli Houston played two splendid shots to reach the green and card a win. I.awsoii made a determined effort at the .'l6th to keep tile game alive, but Houston was equal to the half to settle the match in his favour.
In the semi-finals on Saturday T. J. Lanson brat J. D. Lewis. 3 and 1 and I. W. Houston beat S. F. Goodwin, 3 and 1.
