FULL TAXATION PAID.
STATE ROAD SERVICES. (Bj Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. Referring to the reported statement of Mr. James Begg, before the Ota"o provincial council of the New Zealand Farmers' Union that the Railway Department's road services obtained petrol tax free, the General Manager of Railways Mr. H. Mackley, stated to-dav that Mr. Begg appeared to be under a misapprehension, as both the railwavs passenger and goods roads services pa'id the full duty, which included all taxition, for petrol used by the services. In addition, this Department also paid heavy license fees for the vehicles used in the services. In the latter connection there was a special provision under the Government Railways Amendment Act l!)3l>, authorising the Department to pav heavy license fees, which regulation* were not otherwise binding on the Crown.
