STRUCK GATEKEEPER.

LABOURER IS FINED.

Pleading guilty to assaulting John Brophy, a gatekeeper on one of the wharves, Robert Penny, a labourer, aged 24, was fined £5 by Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court to-day.

Senior Sergeant Calwell said that at 6.45 p.m. on Tuesday last the accused was noticed coming off one of the wharves. Suspecting that accused was concealing something under his coat he was approached by a Customs official, and the Harbour Board's gatekeeper,' Brophy. It was then that accused struck Brophy and ran away. Brophy received a severe cut on the mouth. I Mr. Aekins, appearing for the aecu.-cd, said the offence was due to accused having too much drink. A fireman who intended deserting his ship had asked accused to take an overcoat ashore. When approached by the officials accused. thought there was going to be trouble j and foolishly struck the gatekeeper. His Worship, in fining the accused £5, said he did not regard the offence as trivial.
