PRIMITIVE ISLAND.

DOMINION DOCTOR'S POST.

MELANESIAN MISSION WORK

(By Telegraph.—Presa Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Two young recruits for the Melanesian Mission set out in the Awatea from Wellington to make their home on Malaita, in the Solomons—an island even to-day regarded as one of the wildest places in the Pacific. They were Dr. and Mrs. J. D. Thomson, of Southland, who have gone to relieve Dr. Clifford James at Fauabu, the main mission hospital in the Solomons. Dr. Thomson was educated at the Southland Boys' High School and the Otago Medical School. Until recently be was house surgeon at the Southland Public Hospital, Invercargill. Living conditions of the Malaita natives are extremely primitive, and fever and tropical diseases are rife. Much of the main work of the missions is in combating disease and educating the natives to more hygienic standards.
