ISLAND PROGRESS.

OSTEND ROAD BOARD. SATISFACTORY YEAR REPORTED. A highly satisfactory report of the workings of the past* year was submitted at the iumuiil meeting of the Ostend Road Board, hold in Auckland last night and presided over bv -Mr ¥ H. Brown. The two main highways had been effectively maintained and greatly improved bv widening, the removal of corner* and the easing of grades. Every effort had been made to meet £he wishes of ratepayers who desired good 0.1 trances" to their properties. The finances weie in a sound position, the year, despite the purchase of a new truck at a cost of £400, finishing with a credit balance of £3 10/ to which had to be added £207 due from the Alain Highways Board, plus £1)7 for Scheme V.i and outstanding rates. Liabilities amounted to £4 (j/ti and assets £1173. Outstanding rate* were higher than at the same period last year, but were coming in stc.ulilv. Duriii;: the year 1(J building permits of a value of £1001 were issued, an increase of nearly £200 over IMS. The report went on to mention the work done by the Onetangi Kate; avers' Association and the Ostend Progress League for the improvements in" tindistrict and to expivss appreciation of the courtesy and attention given by offieials of the Labour Department, the Main Highways Board and the Police Department. Miss G. Tribe (district nurse), Mr. C. S. Butler John Ambulance) and Constable F. A. MeKenzie had all been, in their respective spheres, valuable assets to the island. Thanks were also expressed to Messrs. Norman Brinsden, Ernest Binns and Cecil Brown for services rendered to the board during the year. The report was adopted.
