NEW VALVE CAP.
AVOIDS LEAKAGES. Many motorists no doubt have noticed the new design dust caps now being fitted to the rubber valves of motor car tyre tubes. These caps possess a smooth oval crown, whereas those previously in general use had a small pointed top, which, when reversed, acted as a tool for removing the valve airlock spring, which probably is more commonly known as the valve core. To-day new cars, commercial vehicles and tractors are being equipped with tyre tubes possessing rubber valves, this type of valve being adopted to avoid leakages at valve seat and damage to the valve, as was frequent with the old-time metal stems. In the event of a flat tyre, the rubber valve pulls back through the valve hole into the cover, thus preventing damage to the tube, which might necessitate a new valve being fitted. This was a common occurrence with the metal valves. The Dunlop Rubber Company states that the reason for changing over to the new type of cap was that, if the old type pointed cap were fitted to rubber valves, considerable injury to the tube would result if a wheel revolved even a few times on a flat tyre. In the case of metal valves, these are held firm to the rim by a lock nut, and therefore the type of dust cap is of no consequence. To avoid any inconvenience, however, motorists are recommended xo include in their tool kit either, an old type dust cap or a special core remover, which is stocked by most accessory dealers and garages. This small article can quite easily be carried on a kev ring.
